I AM ANAKIN SKYWALKER (jk I wish)
I believe having a mentor is important because they guide you through your personal growth. College is a time of lots of change. Entering college is like finding out the sky is purple, water is dry, and your best friend is a secret mutant ninja turtle all at the same time. It' s a lot to handle and a lot of discovery all at once. Having a mentor is like having a North Star. The North Star doesn't tell you where to go, but guides you in the right direction. So yeah, Wei Ning is like my North Star. She puts me in the right direction without telling me what to do. This is helpful because I know no matter how lost I am, I know I will always be put back in the right direction. Wei Ning puts me in the right direction by recommending how to improve myself. Wei- Ning has helped me through my meetings by being someone I can talk to. I like having someone to give me advice about SERVE because it seems like some kids adjusted a lot faster than others. Having a mentor is helpful because I was able to adjust at my own pace to the college life and to SERVE. Another mentor I had was Melissa who was my mentor from PUMP (Pamplin Undergraduate Mentoring Program). She was able to guide me through my business life. Accounting is a difficult major and it was inspiring to see someone whose hard work has paid off. She has a job with Capital One next year. Catherine was also an emotional mentor to me because she always cared about me. When I was having a bad day she was always one of the first people to ask if I was okay. I appreciate that because it showed me that I was never alone and helped me make Virginia Tech feel like home. Finally, Emma, my RA was a mentor because she took the time to make me feel welcomed. Also, she encouraged to apply to come a RA which was a hard decision because I felt different than the rest of my friends. Everyone else is living off campus and I felt weird following my dream but she made me feel a lot better about it so shout to Emma for showing me it was okay follow my heart. |
